Pasture or Petri? (aka Chicken or the tumor?)

In college we all had to do microbiology- but I never thought I would have to see petri dishes again – I am not in research.

Unfortunately, it seems we are all going to be seeing it in the future of our food.  While I can find the awe in using the fast and uncontrollable growth characteristics that cells have into something that can be seen as beneficial; I am not ready to call it dinner nor am I ready to feed it to my daughter… are you?

While the little research that I have seen says that the cells they are using are not cancerous, the properties that they desire to multiply and grow “meat” are more prevalent in cancerous cells- which leads me to wonder… what would stop them from starting to use cancerous cells and just not mention the change? The almost post-apocalyptic read to it is uncomfortable, but to avoid giving conspiracy vibes I’ll stop there.

Prior to my current career I worked in a medical research lab briefly. Knowing that testing is necessary for the overall benefit didn’t make it easier, but it helped my understanding that I would rather us do this than give untested medications to my loved ones. It calls back what I did see in testing trials and makes me wonder if the long-term consumption of these pre-cancerous cells will eventually lead to a global change in our DNA structure or be harmful in fetal development. It brings to mind the misfigured beings in mad max, the infertile women in a handmaids tail a complete breakdown in overall evolution.

Look at the evolution of medication resistant microbes, MSSA, VRE, CRE, MRSA and the list is continuing to grow. What doors will introducing this... substance/” meat” open?

I am so incredibly lucky that soon I won’t have to worry about petri dish pie and be able to grow fresh foods for our family and hopefully share with other families in our community.
